Hot Meals

Millions of people in this world can’t afford to buy a sandwich or even a juice box, so they go hungry every day. In Henderson and Las Vegas thousands face the same situation.

Unless you’ve been hungry for more than a few hours, you don’t know what homeless and people in need struggle with every day. They never know how or when they’ll eat their next meal. Hunger affects their ability to concentrate and function, making it more difficult for them to find ways to help themselves.

Las Vegas, whose homeless population has doubled in the past decade to about 12,000 people in and around the city, joined several other cities across the country that have adopted or considered ordinances limiting the distribution of charitable meals in parks. Most have restricted the time and place of such handouts, hoping to discourage homeless people from congregating and, in the view of officials, ruining efforts to beautify downtowns and neighborhoods.

Friends in the Desert offers hot meals prepared by volunteers or donor organizations and served to our guests by the volunteers. This is a table service where the guests are seated around tables bringing together as many as 8 visiting friends per table in a family style atmosphere. We feed over 80 guests at each meal service.

At all our hot meal services we have a variety of donated food, snacks, fresh fruit and vegetables, plus all types bread and rolls for “take-out” that allow our Friends to bring food “home” and share with their family. Most often this also serves as a morning or afternoon meal the following day.

We have no restriction on who can participate. All in need are welcome, the price of admission is good behavior. That is why Friends in the Desert does not receive any State or Federal support or grants. We rely solely on the generosity of our volunteers and supporters to keep our services going.

Hot meals are served at 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and at 11:30 AM Saturday along with sack lunches on Saturday to provide a Sunday meal, when the kitchen is “dark”.
